Days Between Calculator
Calculate the exact number of days, working days, weeks, months, and years between two dates
Days in a year, quarter and month
| Period | Common year | Leap year |
|---|---|---|
| Full year | 365 | 366 |
| Weeks in a year | 52 weeks + 1 day (52.14) | 52 weeks + 2 days (52.29) |
| Q1 (January to March) | 90 | 91 |
| Q2 (April to June) | 91 | 91 |
| Q3 (July to September) | 92 | 92 |
| Q4 (October to December) | 92 | 92 |
| First half (January to June) | 181 | 182 |
| Second half (July to December) | 184 | 184 |
| February | 28 | 29 |
| April, June, September, November | 30 each | 30 each |
| January, March, May, July, August, October, December | 31 each | 31 each |
A leap year (such as 2024 or 2028) adds 29 February. 1 January 2024 to 1 January 2025 is 366 days; 1 January 2025 to 1 January 2026 is 365.
How to Count the Days Between Two Dates
To find the days between two dates, subtract the earlier date from the later one. Between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2025 the difference is 364 days. If you also count the last day, the answer is 365. Both answers are correct; they answer slightly different questions, which is why the calculator has an option to include the end date.
Inclusive vs Exclusive Counting
- Exclusive (end date not counted) measures elapsed time, like the number of nights in a hotel stay. 25 December 2025 to 1 January 2026 is 7 days.
- Inclusive (end date counted) measures how many calendar days are touched, like the days of a holiday where you are away on both the first and the last day. The same range is 8 days.
- Spreadsheets and most programming languages subtract dates, so they give the exclusive answer. Legal and contract wording often says 'inclusive', so check which one applies before relying on the result.
- Same date twice: exclusive gives 0 days, inclusive gives 1 day.
Worked Examples
- 15 March 2025 to 4 July 2025: 16 days left in March after the 15th, plus 30 (April), 31 (May), 30 (June) and 4 in July = 111 days, or 112 if you count both ends.
- 1 January 2024 to 1 January 2025: 366 days, because 2024 is a leap year and contains 29 February.
- 1 January 2025 to 1 January 2026: 365 days, because 2025 is not a leap year.
- 28 February to 1 March: 1 day in 2025, but 2 days in 2024 because of 29 February.
- 1 January 2000 to 1 January 2026: 9,497 days. That is 26 years x 365 = 9,490, plus 7 leap days (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024).
- Working days in September 2025: the month has 30 days and starts on a Monday. The weekends are the 6th-7th, 13th-14th, 20th-21st and 27th-28th, which is 8 weekend days, leaving 22 working days before public holidays.
How Leap Years Change the Count
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 1900 and 2100 are not, and 2000 was. A leap year has 366 days because 29 February is added.
Over a full 400-year cycle there are 97 leap years, giving 146,097 days (exactly 20,871 weeks). That makes the average year 365.2425 days long. The calculator counts real calendar days, so leap days are always included correctly; only the 'years' and 'months' conversions use averages (365.25 days per year and 30.44 days per month) and are approximate.
Handy Day Counts
- 30 days = 4 weeks and 2 days
- 90 days = 12 weeks and 6 days
- 100 days = 14 weeks and 2 days
- 180 days = 25 weeks and 5 days
- 365 days = 52 weeks and 1 day
- 1,000 days is about 2.74 years: counting 1,000 days from 1 January 2025 lands on 28 September 2027
- 10,000 days is about 27.4 years

Formulas Used
Total Days
Total Days = End Date - Start Date + 1This formula calculates the total number of days between two dates, inclusive of the end date. By subtracting the start date from the end date and adding one, it accounts for the full range of days. It’s the foundation for other time calculations and handles leap years automatically in most date systems.
Working Days
Working Days = Total Days - Weekends - HolidaysThis formula determines the number of working days by starting with the total days and subtracting weekends (typically Saturdays and Sundays) and any specified holidays. It’s useful for project planning or calculating business days, requiring a calendar system to identify weekends and holidays.
Weeks
Weeks = Total Days ÷ 7This formula converts the total number of days into weeks by dividing by 7, the number of days in a week. It provides a simple way to express time spans in weeks, often used for scheduling or estimating project durations. The result may include decimal places for partial weeks.
Months
Months = Total Days ÷ 30.44This formula estimates the number of months by dividing the total days by 30.44, the average number of days in a month (accounting for varying month lengths and leap years). It’s an approximation, useful for long-term planning or rough time estimates, but may not align with calendar months.
Years
Years = Total Days ÷ 365.25This formula converts total days into years by dividing by 365.25, the average number of days in a year (including leap years). It provides an approximate measure of time in years, commonly used for age calculations or long-term projections, with minor adjustments for precision.
Variables Explained
Start Date
The initial date in the calculation, representing the beginning of the time period. It’s typically input in a standard date format (e.g., MM/DD/YYYY) and serves as the reference point for all time calculations.
End Date
The final date in the calculation, marking the end of the time period. Like the start date, it’s input in a standard format and must be on or after the start date for accurate results.
Total Days
The total number of days between the start and end dates, inclusive of the end date. This value is the basis for other calculations like weeks, months, or years, and accounts for leap years in the date system.
Working Days
The number of days available for work, calculated by excluding weekends and holidays from the total days. It’s specific to contexts like business or project management, depending on regional or custom holiday calendars.
Weekends
Days typically considered non-working, such as Saturdays and Sundays in many calendars. These are subtracted from total days to calculate working days, based on the calendar system used.
Holidays
Specific non-working days, such as national or organizational holidays, excluded from the working days calculation. These vary by region or user input and require a defined list for accuracy.
Weeks
The number of weeks derived from dividing total days by 7. It represents the time span in terms of complete or partial weeks, useful for scheduling or tracking milestones.
Months
An approximate measure of time in months, calculated by dividing total days by 30.44. It’s an average to account for varying month lengths and leap years, used for rough estimates.
Years
An approximate measure of time in years, calculated by dividing total days by 365.25 to account for leap years. It’s used for long-term time spans, such as age or project durations.
Important Notes
Keep in mind, this calculator is just for fun and planning. It's based on the calendar we all use, so it's not like, super scientific.
If you mess up the end date, your results might be off, so be careful.
This thing is for casual stuff, not like, super serious legal or money business. Get an adult for that.
