Text Length Analytics & Linguistic Tokenization

A professional word counter evaluates text volume across multiple dimensions: raw token volume, characters with and without whitespace, sentence boundaries, paragraph structures, estimated reading and speaking duration, and Flesch Reading Ease readability scores. All text is analyzed entirely in-memory within your client browser, ensuring 100% privacy with zero data transmission.

Counting Modes: Standard, Detailed, and Academic

  • Standard Mode: Tokenizes words based on whitespace boundaries (spaces, tabs, newlines). Ideal for quick document sizing, journalism, and essay length verification.
  • Detailed Mode: Intelligently handles contractions (e.g., 'don't' counted as a single word) and hyphenated compound terms (e.g., 'state-of-the-art') according to standard typographic conventions.
  • Academic Mode: Strips scholarly citation markers such as bracketed numeric references [1], [2-4] and parenthetical author-date citations (Smith, 2024; Taylor & Jones, 2021) prior to tokenization so academic bibliographies do not inflate the assessed body text count.

Hand-Verified Worked Example

Sample text: 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.'

  • Word Count: 9 words
  • Total Characters (with spaces): 44 characters
  • Character Count (without spaces): 36 characters (44 characters − 8 whitespace separators)
  • Sentence Count: 1 sentence
  • Paragraph Count: 1 paragraph
  • Average Word Length: 4.0 letters per word
  • Reading Time: 1 minute (9 words / 225 wpm = 0.04 min, rounded up to 1 min)
  • Speaking Time: 1 minute (9 words / 150 wpm = 0.06 min, rounded up to 1 min)
  • Estimated Syllables: 12 syllables (36 letters / 3 ≈ 12)
  • Flesch Reading Ease Score: 206.835 − 1.015 × (9 / 1) − 84.6 × (12 / 9) = 206.835 − 9.135 − 112.8 = 84.9 (Easy / 6th-grade level)

Formulas Used

Word Count Determination

Words = Count(Tokens delimited by \s+)

Extracts contiguous non-whitespace character clusters. In academic mode, citations matching \[\d+\] or \(\w+, \d{4}\) are pre-filtered before counting.

Reading & Speaking Duration

Reading Time = ceil(Words / 225) min | Speaking Time = ceil(Words / 150) min

Applies validated psycholinguistic reading rates: 225 words per minute for silent adult reading, and 150 words per minute for deliberate spoken delivery.

Flesch Reading Ease Index

Score = 206.835 - 1.015 * (Words / Sentences) - 84.6 * (Syllables / Words)

Scores range from 0 to 100. Scores above 70 indicate plain English accessible to general audiences; scores below 30 indicate dense academic prose.

Variables Explained

Total Characters

Complete character length including alphanumeric glyphs, punctuation, and whitespace.

Characters (No Spaces)

•

Text processing executes entirely locally within your client browser session. No text data is uploaded, logged, or transmitted across the network.

•

Readability syllable counts use standard heuristic approximations suitable for English prose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paste or type your text directly into the input editor. The calculator processes text live in real time, showing immediate updates for word count, character count, sentence volume, reading time, and readability score without requiring page refreshes.
In standard academic formatting (1-inch margins, 12pt Times New Roman, double-spaced), one page contains approximately 250 words. A single-spaced document contains approximately 500 words per page.
At the standard adult silent reading rate of 225 words per minute, 1,000 words takes approximately 4.5 to 5 minutes to read. If spoken aloud at 150 words per minute, it takes approximately 6.5 to 7 minutes.
Both counts are displayed simultaneously: total characters (including whitespace) for platform limits such as SMS or X/Twitter, and characters excluding spaces for translation and publisher billing standards.
In Standard Mode, hyphenated words without spaces (e.g., 'cost-effective') are counted as a single token. In Detailed Mode, compound parts are analyzed based on typographic structure.
A standard post on X (formerly Twitter) allows up to 280 characters. Instagram captions support up to 2,200 characters, LinkedIn posts support 3,000 characters, and standard SMS messages are limited to 160 characters per segment.
For consumer web articles and marketing copy, aim for a Flesch score between 60 and 70 (8th to 9th-grade reading level). For technical documentation or legal briefs, scores between 30 and 50 are common.
Select 'Academic Mode' in the Count Mode selector. This mode strips bracketed numeric citations (e.g., [1], [12-15]) and author-date citations (e.g., Smith, 2020) so you measure only your substantive prose against essay word limits.
