HEIC to PNG Converter

You need a PNG version of an iPhone photo, perhaps for an editor, a design tool or a document that will not take HEIC. PNG stores the picture without adding new compression loss. This page converts your HEIC file in the browser tab, and the photo is never sent to any server.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Add your HEIC files by dropping them, clicking the drop zone or pasting.
  2. The output format is already set to PNG. Adjust quality or size if you need to.
  3. Press Convert and compare the original and new size for each file.
  4. Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.

When to convert, and when not to

  • A design or editing tool accepts PNG but not HEIC.
  • You plan to edit and save the picture repeatedly and want no extra loss on each save.
  • You need a screenshot-style, lossless file from a phone image.
  • Do not convert for e-mail or sharing. PNG files from photographs are large; JPG is the usual choice there.

What changes

  • The photo is decoded first, then written as PNG with no further quality loss.
  • The PNG will normally be much larger than the HEIC. Compare the sizes shown for your own files.
  • Orientation is applied so the photo should be upright.
  • Only the first image in the file is used, so a Live Photo becomes a single still.
  • Shooting details and location data are not copied.

How the conversion works

HEIC cannot be read directly by a browser's drawing surface, so the tool first uses a decoder that is downloaded only when you add a HEIC file. That decoder produces a picture that the browser can handle, and then the PNG is written from it.

Because the pipeline goes through an intermediate image, you should look at the result and make sure the quality is right for your use before processing a whole batch.

Use the preview in the list to confirm the photo looks as expected. The converter runs the HEIC through a decoder, so a quick look at the first result avoids waiting for a long batch that turns out to be wrong.

The result is a snapshot of the decoded photo. It will not contain the extra data that a camera app can store with a HEIC, such as depth information, and it will not have the Live Photo motion.

Why PNG files from photos are big

PNG keeps every pixel value. A photograph holds a huge number of slightly different pixels, so there is little repetition for lossless compression to take advantage of, and the result is a heavy file.

If the size is a problem, reduce the dimensions with the percent or max size option. A smaller picture gives a smaller PNG without changing the format.

For documents and web pages that already contain lots of photos, PNG is rarely the right choice. It is best kept for pictures you intend to edit further.

Memory limits on phones

Large photographs turned into uncompressed pixels need a lot of memory, and a phone has less of it than a computer. If conversion fails, try a smaller batch or reduce the size first.

Everything runs locally, so nothing leaves your device even when you are on a slow connection.

If you only need a small image for a thumbnail or profile, set a maximum size first. A reduced picture converts faster and gives a lighter file.

Keep your original HEIC files. They remain your best source if you want a different size or format later, and conversions made from a converted copy always start from less information.

Privacy: your files stay on your device

  • The tool decodes, resizes and encodes your pictures with your browser. The files are never sent to a server.
  • To check it yourself: open the browser developer tools (F12), open the Network tab, convert a file, and look for any request that carries your image. You will see none.

Frequently asked questions

Is PNG better than JPG for iPhone photos?

It is lossless but much larger. For sharing, JPG is usually more practical.

Does the PNG include transparency?

Photos have no transparent areas, so the result is a normal opaque picture.

Why was my file so big?

PNG stores every pixel. Try a smaller size with the resize option.

Can I convert many files?

Yes, one after another. Use smaller batches on a phone.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. All steps run in your browser.

Should I pick PNG or JPG for sharing?

JPG, in most cases. PNG is for editing and for pictures that need a lossless copy.

Is the PNG exactly like the HEIC?

It holds the decoded picture without further loss. Extras such as Live Photo motion or depth data are not included.
