JPG to GIF Converter

You need a GIF file but your picture is a JPG. This converter creates a single-frame GIF from it, on your device. GIF can only hold a limited palette, so photos change in a visible way. Read the notes below to judge whether a GIF is really what you need or whether another format would serve you better.

How to convert JPG to GIF

  1. Add your JPG files by dropping them, clicking the drop zone or pasting.
  2. The output format is already set to GIF. Adjust quality or size if you need to.
  3. Press Convert and compare the original and new size for each file.
  4. Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.

When to convert, and when not to

  • A platform, form or legacy program accepts GIF but not JPG.
  • The picture is simple, such as a diagram, logo or flat illustration.
  • You want a still placeholder that is a real GIF file.
  • For detailed photographs, JPG, WebP or PNG will look much better.

What changes

  • The picture is reduced to at most 255 colours chosen to fit it best, plus one slot reserved for transparency.
  • Smooth gradients can show visible bands, because no dithering is applied.
  • The result is one still frame. This tool does not make animations.
  • Metadata is not kept and phone rotation is applied first.
  • There is no quality slider. Only resizing changes the size of the file.

What the colour limit does to a photograph

A JPG can show millions of colours. A GIF palette holds far fewer, so the converter picks representative colours for your picture and maps each pixel to the nearest one. Flat areas survive well. Skies, skin and shadows, which depend on smooth shifts in tone, tend to break into steps.

This tool does not smooth those steps with dithering, which keeps the output clean and predictable but means gradients look more banded. If that bothers you, choose PNG or WebP for the photo and save GIF for graphics.

Still image only

People often search for JPG to GIF hoping to make an animation. A single JPG contains one picture, so the GIF you get here has one frame. To animate, you would need several images in a tool that builds frame sequences. This page is for the plain format change.

Using resize to control the file

Because GIF has no quality setting, the pixel dimensions are your main control. Scale the image down by a percentage or to a maximum width and height before converting. Convert one image, look at the size shown beside it, and adjust before processing the rest of the batch.

When another format is the better answer

If you want a lighter photo, WebP or an optimised JPG will do better than GIF. If you want to keep every colour, PNG does that. If you want movement, you need a sequence of frames, which this single-image tool does not build.

GIF still makes sense when a system specifically requires it, when the picture is flat graphics, or when you need that exact file type for compatibility with an old program. Choose it deliberately, and compare the result with the original JPG before you rely on it.

Lastly, remember that GIF files made from photographs often come out larger than the same picture saved as JPG, even though they have fewer colours. The format uses a simpler kind of compression that works best on flat areas. Compare the sizes shown beside the original and the result, and let those numbers guide whether GIF is worth keeping for this particular image.

Privacy: your files stay on your device

  • The tool decodes, resizes and encodes your pictures with your browser. The files are never sent to a server.
  • To check it yourself: open the browser developer tools (F12), open the Network tab, convert a file, and look for any request that carries your image. You will see none.

Frequently asked questions

Will the GIF be animated?

No. A JPG has one picture, so the GIF has one frame.

Why does my photo look blocky in GIF?

GIF holds a limited palette, so smooth areas can show bands.

How many colours are used?

Up to 255, plus one reserved for transparency.

Is there a quality slider?

No. Use the resize options to change the file size.

Does it upload my image?

No. It all happens in your browser.

Will the GIF look the same as my JPG?

Flat areas will. Smooth gradients and detailed photos usually show visible differences.

What is the largest GIF this tool can make?

GIF stores width and height in a limited range, and very large pictures also strain browser memory. If the conversion fails, reduce the size with the resize option and try again.
