MNG to JPG Converter
MNG was meant to be an animated cousin of PNG, but almost no software opens it today. If you only need the picture inside, this converter pulls out the first embedded PNG frame and saves it as a JPG. It runs in your browser and does not upload your file. The animation itself is not preserved.
Embed this tool on your websiteShow code
Free to use on any site. Paste the code where you want the tool to appear. It runs inside the page; visitors' files are processed in their own browser and are not uploaded.
WordPress and most site builders have a "Custom HTML" block where this code can be pasted. The embed keeps a small link back to CalcMaster.
How to convert MNG to JPG
- Add your MNG files by dropping them, clicking the drop zone or pasting.
- The output format is already set to JPG. Adjust quality or size if you need to.
- Press Convert and compare the original and new size for each file.
- Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
When to convert, and when not to
- You want a still image from an old animated graphic or web element.
- A program refuses the .mng file and you only need a preview of what is inside.
- You are cataloguing legacy web assets and want a picture for each file.
- Do not use this to keep an animation. Only the first frame is converted, and the timing and later frames are dropped.
What changes
- The tool locates the first PNG image embedded in the MNG and uses that picture.
- Animation, frame timing, looping and any later frames are not kept.
- MNG files that contain only JNG frames, which are JPEG-based, are not supported and show a clear message.
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas of the PNG frame are filled with your background colour.
- If you want to keep transparency, set the output to PNG instead of JPG.
What an MNG file contains
An MNG file is a container that can hold several images and instructions for showing them one after another. The images inside are commonly PNG pictures, so the individual frames are ordinary pictures wrapped in extra animation data.
This tool uses that structure. It finds the first PNG picture in the file and hands it to your browser to decode, which is why the colours and detail match what the original frame would show.
Why only one frame
The output formats on this site hold single pictures. A JPG cannot move. Converting every frame would give a pile of separate stills, and rebuilding the original timing would need an animation format that this converter does not write.
If the first frame is just a blank placeholder or an introduction, the result may not look like what you expect. In that case you will need software that understands MNG animation to extract other frames.
Frames made from JPEG data
MNG has a sibling for photographic frames called JNG. Files that hold only that kind of frame do not contain a PNG, so there is nothing for this tool to extract. It tells you so instead of producing an empty image.
When the frame is a PNG with transparency, consider keeping the PNG output. A JPG would flatten the see-through areas onto a solid colour, which is usually not what you want for graphics that were designed to sit on top of a page.
Checking what you got
After converting, compare the JPG with how the file looked in the program that made it, if you still have one. A frame the size of a web page suggests an animation canvas, while a tiny frame points to a small web element such as a button or an icon. Neither is an error. The pixel size is shown beside each result, which helps you tell them apart.
Because only the first frame is read, a file that begins with a blank or fully transparent frame may give a plain coloured result once the background colour is applied. If that happens, the content you want sits in a later frame, and a dedicated MNG tool is the way to reach it.
Privacy: your files stay on your device
- The tool decodes, resizes and encodes your pictures with your browser. The files are never sent to a server.
- To check it yourself: open the browser developer tools (F12), open the Network tab, convert a file, and look for any request that carries your image. You will see none.
Frequently asked questions
Does the tool keep the MNG animation?
No. Only the first embedded PNG frame is converted to a still picture.
My MNG gave an error. Why?
It may contain only JNG frames, which are not supported, or the file may be damaged. The message says which case applies.
Can I keep transparent areas?
Not in a JPG. Choose PNG as the output format to preserve transparency.
Can I get every frame as a separate picture?
No. This tool returns only the first frame.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read and converted entirely in your browser tab.
