NEF to JPG Converter
NEF is the RAW file type from Nikon cameras, and many everyday programs cannot show it. This converter reads the full-size JPEG preview that the camera saved inside each NEF and writes a normal picture on your own device. It is a fast route to something you can open and share, not a RAW processor.
Embed this tool on your websiteShow code
Free to use on any site. Paste the code where you want the tool to appear. It runs inside the page; visitors' files are processed in their own browser and are not uploaded.
WordPress and most site builders have a "Custom HTML" block where this code can be pasted. The embed keeps a small link back to CalcMaster.
How to convert NEF to JPG
- Add your NEF files by dropping them, clicking the drop zone or pasting.
- The output format is already set to JPG. Adjust quality or size if you need to.
- Press Convert and compare the original and new size for each file.
- Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
When to convert, and when not to
- You want to look at or share Nikon shots on a computer without RAW software.
- A client, form or website needs JPG copies of photos you only have as NEF.
- You are culling a shoot and want quick viewable versions before editing the best ones.
- Do not use it to rescue exposure or white balance; the sensor data is not opened here.
What changes
- The tool extracts the preview JPEG that the camera embedded and does not develop the sensor data.
- The look follows the camera settings that were active when the picture was taken, since the preview was made in the camera.
- The preview may be smaller than the full sensor picture, depending on the camera and its image settings.
- The preview is decoded and saved again as JPG, so the quality slider matters.
- Rotation from the file is applied, and a file with no usable preview is reported clearly.
Where the picture comes from
A NEF file is Nikon's RAW container. Its main content is the unprocessed sensor information, which needs software to turn into a finished image. To make browsing quick, the camera also writes a JPEG preview into the file, rendered with the camera's own colour and contrast settings.
That preview is the picture you get here. It reflects the look you saw on the camera screen, including the in-camera style that was selected for the shot, which is why the colours often match your memory of the scene.
Limits compared with RAW software
Because only the preview is read, the flexibility of RAW is not available. You cannot change white balance after the fact, pull back bright highlights or lift dark shadows from the original sensor data. Whatever the preview shows is what you receive.
For casual sharing, proofing and archiving a viewable set, that is often enough. For serious editing, keep the NEF originals and use RAW software on them. This page is a quick companion to that, not a rival to it.
Batches and large files
NEF files can be big. Add a few at a time, press Convert and wait for each row to finish before adding more, especially on a phone. The resize option reduces the pixel size, which also reduces the JPG file size, and the ZIP download collects the whole set in one go.
Checking a Nikon batch quickly
After a shoot, convert a few frames first and open one at full size to confirm the sharpness and colour. Then process the rest. Because the work runs in the browser tab, you can leave the page open while it works through the queue, and each row reports its own result, so one problem file never stops the others.
Privacy: your files stay on your device
- The tool decodes, resizes and encodes your pictures with your browser. The files are never sent to a server.
- To check it yourself: open the browser developer tools (F12), open the Network tab, convert a file, and look for any request that carries your image. You will see none.
Frequently asked questions
Does this open the NEF's sensor data?
No. It reads the JPEG preview stored in the file.
Will the colours match my camera screen?
Usually. The preview was rendered by the camera with its own settings.
Can I recover blown highlights here?
No. That needs RAW software working on the original data.
Why is the picture smaller than my camera resolution?
The embedded preview can be smaller than the full sensor image, depending on the camera and its settings.
Are NEF files from compact Nikon cameras supported?
Those use the NRW extension and have their own page. The same preview method applies.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The files are processed in this browser tab on your device.
