PEF to JPG Converter

PEF is the RAW format used by Pentax cameras, and most everyday photo viewers cannot open it. This converter reads the preview picture the camera stored inside each PEF and saves a standard JPG on your own device. It is made for quick sharing and checking, and it does not replace RAW software.

Free to use on any site. Paste the code where you want the tool to appear. It runs inside the page; visitors' files are processed in their own browser and are not uploaded.

WordPress and most site builders have a "Custom HTML" block where this code can be pasted. The embed keeps a small link back to CalcMaster.

How to convert PEF to JPG

  1. Add your PEF files by dropping them, clicking the drop zone or pasting.
  2. The output format is already set to JPG. Adjust quality or size if you need to.
  3. Press Convert and compare the original and new size for each file.
  4. Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.

When to convert, and when not to

  • You want viewable copies of Pentax shots for e-mail, chat or a web page.
  • Your usual program or upload form does not list the .pef extension.
  • You are choosing which frames to edit properly and want a fast overview.
  • Do not use it to change exposure or white balance from the RAW data; the sensor information is not read here.

What changes

  • The tool takes the embedded JPEG preview from the PEF and leaves the sensor data alone.
  • The look is the camera's own rendering, with the colour and contrast settings used at the time of the shot.
  • The preview can be smaller than the full sensor picture, depending on the camera and its settings.
  • The preview is decoded and saved again as JPG, so the quality slider matters for the result.
  • A rotation tag in the file is applied, and a file with no preview produces a clear message.

What a PEF file holds

PEF stands for Pentax Electronic File. It stores the unprocessed signal from the camera sensor, which is why it offers a lot of editing room but needs special software to display. To help with quick viewing, the camera also writes a JPEG preview into the same file.

This converter uses that preview. It is a complete photograph made by the camera, so it opens like any other picture once it has been saved in a standard file.

Fast copies, not final edits

The preview carries the camera's decisions about brightness, colour and sharpness. That works well when you need to see how a shot turned out or send it to someone. It does not give you the headroom that RAW editing offers, so shadows and highlights cannot be rescued beyond what the preview shows.

For pictures you care about, keep the PEF as your master. Use RAW software when you want to adjust them, and use this page when you only need a copy that opens everywhere.

Getting the most from the batch

Convert a small group first and open one result at full size. If it looks right, process the rest. Set the quality slider according to how the pictures will be used, and apply resize when you are preparing them for a message or a page. Everything stays on your device, and the ZIP download gathers the finished set.

Naming and organising the results

Converted files keep the original name with a new extension, so a set stays in the same order as your PEF files. Download them as a ZIP and keep that archive beside the originals. If you convert the same shoot twice with different quality settings, rename the archives so that you can tell the two sets apart later.

Privacy: your files stay on your device

  • The tool decodes, resizes and encodes your pictures with your browser. The files are never sent to a server.
  • To check it yourself: open the browser developer tools (F12), open the Network tab, convert a file, and look for any request that carries your image. You will see none.

Frequently asked questions

What does PEF stand for?

Pentax Electronic File, the RAW format used by Pentax cameras.

Does the converter develop the RAW data?

No. It saves the JPEG preview that the camera embedded.

Why is the picture smaller than my camera's resolution?

The embedded preview can be smaller than the sensor image.

Can I edit white balance afterwards?

Not from this result. Use RAW software on the original PEF for that.

What if the file has no preview?

The tool reports that none was found. The file may be damaged.

Are my pictures uploaded?

No. Everything runs in this browser tab on your device.
