Resize PNG Images
Your PNG is a logo, a screenshot or an icon, and it is not the size you need. This resizer scales it to a new width and height and saves it as a PNG again, with any see-through areas still see-through. The file type is not changed, and the picture is processed on your own device rather than uploaded.
How to resize PNG images
- Add your PNG files by dropping them, clicking the drop zone or pasting.
- Choose the new size: a percentage, a maximum width and height, or an exact size. The quick sizes fill in common values.
- Press Resize and compare the old and new size of each file. The file type stays the same.
- Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
When to resize, and when not to
- A logo or icon has to fit a fixed slot on a website, in a document or in an app.
- A screenshot is far larger than it needs to be for a help page or an email.
- You need a transparent PNG at a different size without opening an editor.
- Do not shrink a screenshot full of small text below the point where it can still be read.
What changes
- The file stays a PNG, and transparent areas stay transparent, including the empty space added by Fit inside.
- PNG is lossless, so saving it again adds no compression damage. Only the change of pixel size alters the look.
- There is no quality slider for PNG, because the format does not use one.
- Metadata is not written to the new file, and each result is named with the new size, such as logo-512x512.png.
- To reach a file size limit, the tool can only use fewer pixels, since a lossless format has no quality to lower.
Why transparency survives resizing a PNG
A PNG stores an extra channel that says how see-through each pixel is. The resizer scales that channel together with the colours, so a logo on a transparent background comes out as a logo on a transparent background. The soft edge of a rounded shape or a shadow stays soft, because the in-between values are scaled as well.
When you choose Exact size with Fit inside, the space around the picture is left transparent instead of being filled with a colour. That makes it easy to put a logo into a square canvas without adding a white box behind it. If you would rather have a solid colour, the PNG can be converted to a type without transparency in the Image Converter.
Lossless does not mean the file gets smaller
A PNG keeps every pixel exactly, so its size depends on the content. Flat graphics with big areas of one colour compress very well and shrink a lot when you reduce them. A photograph saved as PNG stays large, because there are few repeating patterns for the format to exploit. Compare the original size and new size shown for each file to see what you really gained.
Because PNG has no quality slider, Aim for a file size works differently here. The tool reduces the pixel dimensions step by step until the file fits, and the note under the result says what the final size was.
Keeping sharp edges and readable text
Hard edges and thin lines are where resizing shows. When a pixel is scaled to a fraction of its size, neighbouring pixels are blended, so a crisp one-pixel line turns into a soft grey one. Scaling by a clean factor such as half usually looks tidier than an arbitrary size, and Percent makes that easy.
For screenshots, shrink only as far as the text stays legible, and view the result at its real size before you send it. For icons, it is often better to resize down from a large original than to enlarge a small one, because enlarged icons look blurry however they are scaled.
Privacy: your files stay on your device
- The tool decodes, resizes and encodes your pictures with your browser. The files are never sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Is the transparency kept?
Yes. The see-through parts of your PNG stay see-through, and the empty space added by Fit inside is transparent too.
Why is there no quality slider for PNG?
PNG is lossless, so it has nothing to lower. Only the pixel size changes the look and, usually, the file size.
Why is my resized PNG still large?
Photos and detailed images compress poorly as PNG. Reduce the pixel size more, or compare with a JPG or WebP made in the converter.
How do I reach a size limit with a PNG?
Turn on Aim for a file size. The tool shrinks the pixels step by step until the file fits and tells you the final dimensions.
Why do thin lines look blurry after resizing?
Scaling blends neighbouring pixels. A clean factor such as 50 percent usually keeps lines tidier than an odd size.
