Resize TGA Images
You have a TGA texture or sprite that is the wrong size for a game engine, a 3D scene or a template, and you want a TGA at the new size rather than another format. This resizer scales the pixels and writes a new TGA, all inside your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, and the file type stays the same.
How to resize TGA images
- Add your TGA files by dropping them, clicking the drop zone or pasting.
- Choose the new size: a percentage, a maximum width and height, or an exact size. The quick sizes fill in common values.
- Press Resize and compare the old and new size of each file. The file type stays the same.
- Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
When to resize, and when not to
- A texture or sprite sheet must match a required width and height.
- You want smaller copies of large TGA textures for a quick preview in a tool or an engine.
- Several TGA files need one size before you add them to a project.
- Be careful with pixel art and atlas sheets that depend on exact pixels, because smoothing blends neighbouring pixels. For another file type, use the Image Converter.
What changes
- The output is a 32-bit uncompressed TGA with an alpha channel and a top-left origin.
- RLE-compressed and paletted TGA files are read, but they are written uncompressed, so a file can grow even when its pixels shrink.
- Alpha is kept, so transparent areas stay transparent.
- TGA has no quality setting, so a file size target is reached only by making the picture smaller in pixels.
- Anything stored outside the pixels, such as extra notes in the file, is not kept.
Textures, smoothing and exact sizes
TGA is common for textures, sprites and render output, so the size you need is usually a specific one. Exact size lets you type a width and a height. Fit inside keeps the whole picture and leaves the spare space transparent, Fill and crop covers the box and trims the edges, and Stretch changes the proportions to match the box.
The picture is scaled with smooth resampling. That gives clean results for photographs and painted textures, but hard-edged pixel art can blur, especially when enlarged. Check a result before you use it in a project that needs crisp pixels.
Use Max size when you only need to cap the longest side and want the proportions left alone, and Percent when every texture in a set should shrink by the same amount.
Why a TGA can grow when you resize it
Some TGA files are stored with run-length compression or with a colour palette. This tool reads them, but it always writes a 32-bit file without compression. A flat, simple texture that was small on disk because of compression can therefore come out larger, even after you reduce its pixels.
Compare the sizes shown next to each file. If you need a smaller file, reduce the pixel size further, or switch on Aim for a file size and let the tool shrink the picture until it fits.
Keeping transparency when you pad or crop
Because TGA output keeps an alpha channel, padding added by Fit inside stays transparent instead of being filled with a background colour. That suits sprites and decals that will be placed over another picture.
Downloads are named with the original name and the new size, for example wall-512x512.tga, so each result sits beside the original without replacing it. Files are resized one after another, and you can download them together as a ZIP.
Because nothing is uploaded, large textures use your own device's memory, so a very large batch is best done in smaller groups.
Privacy: your files stay on your device
- The tool decodes, resizes and encodes your pictures with your browser. The files are never sent to a server.
Frequently asked questions
Does my TGA stay a TGA?
Yes. The resizer never changes the file type. If you want another format, use the Image Converter.
Is the transparency kept?
Yes. The new TGA has an alpha channel, and padding from Fit inside stays transparent.
Why is the new TGA bigger even though it has fewer pixels?
The new file is written uncompressed with 32 bits per pixel. A source that used compression or a palette can be smaller on disk than the resized copy.
Will pixel art stay sharp?
The picture is scaled with smooth resampling, so hard pixel edges can blur, especially when you enlarge. Check a result before you rely on it.
Can I get a TGA under a set number of kilobytes?
Switch on Aim for a file size and enter the number. TGA has no quality setting, so the tool reaches it by reducing the pixels.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The TGA is read and resized in this browser tab and never leaves your device.
